Carragher expects Manchester United to challenge for Premier League title

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher believes Manchester United will be fighting for the title come the end of the season.

The game will be Jose Mourinho’s second match against Jurgen Klopp in the Premier League, having faced the German towards the end of his reign as Chelsea manager last season.

This term, Liverpool are currently fourth in the table, two points behind leaders Manchester City; while United will are sixth and five points behind the Citizens.

Speaking on Sky Sports News, the former defender said: “It probably feels like that [Liverpool more likely to win title than United] now, because of how Liverpool have started the season, but it was only two or three days ago we were saying it was going to be a shoot-out for the league between United and City.”

The fierce rivalry between the two clubs mean that neither will want to give an inch as they know that even a defeat this early in the season can damage a title challenge.

He continued: “I still think United will be right up there come the end of the season, the manager has got great experience of winning the Premier League, so I certainly wouldn’t write Manchester United off at such an early stage.

“I think them, and hopefully Liverpool, will be up there fighting for the title.”

Since Liverpool last won a league title, United have dominated the Premier League. However, following the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson, the Red Devils have struggled for consistency.
