Chelsea on course to be the second best Premier League team EVER

Chelsea’s form over the last few months hasn’t just been impressive. It could yet make 2016/17 a record-breakingly brilliant season for The Blues.

Antonio Conte’s side have won 16 of their last 18 Premier League games – a remarkable run of form which has left them them nine points clear at the top of the table. In total, they have racked up 59 points from the 24 matches they have played so far, which works out to 2.46 points per game.

You can only truly appreciate the magnificence of that haul when you figure out what that equates to over a whole season. If Chelsea can maintain that rate of 2.46 points per game over the course of their 38 matches, they will end the season with 93 points.

Aside from virtually guaranteeing they would finish as champions, 93 points would put them second on the list of best ever Premier League points tallies.

Here’s the current top five:

Arsenal 2003/04, 90 points (2.37 points per game)

Man United 2008/09, 90 points (2.37 points per game)

Man United 1999/00, 91 points (2.39 points per game)

Chelsea 2005/06, 91 points (2.39 points per game)

Chelsea 2004/05, 95 points (2.50 points per game)

So, if Conte’s boys end up with 93 points, there will only be one manager who has led a Premier League team to a bigger points tally.
