Chelsea target Abdennour explains why his deadline day move failed

Chelsea target Aymen Abdennour has confirmed that he held talks with English clubs during the summer transfer window but revealed that a move failed to materialise for financial reasons.

The 27-year-old was linked with a move away from Valencia, with Chelsea and Everton both reported to have expressed an interest in signing him. However, Abdennour insisted that he is happy to remain at the Mestalla.

As reported by the Daily Star, Abdennour said: “I was negotiating with English clubs during the transfer window, but for financial reasons the transfer did not happen.

“Valencia is a great club and I have no problem continuing because I have four years left on my contract.”

The centre-back was seen as a potential solution to Chelsea’s problems in that department, but the Blues subsequently turned their thoughts elsewhere and managed to re-sign David Luiz from Paris Saint-Germain.

An excellent distributor of the ball, Abdennour has been successful with 89% of his attempted passes in La Liga so far this season and is a dependable performer.

Although they lost Shkodran Mustafi to Arsenal in the closing stages of the transfer window, Valencia made sure to bring in reinforcements in that area of the pitch as they signed Ezequiel Garay from Zenit St. Petersburg, while Eliaquim Mangala joined on loan from Manchester City.

Valencia have made a disappointing start to the season, with Pako Ayestaran’s side having suffered defeats against Las Palmas and Eibar. They will hope to return to winning ways when they host Real Betis on Sunday.
