Conte hopeful that David Luiz will return against Middlesbrough

Chelsea boss Antonio Conte has played down fears over David Luiz’s injury, revealing it’s not a “serious” problem.

Luiz was forced off during Chelsea’s 3-0 win over Everton on Sunday afternoon, looking to be in great pain with a knock to his left leg.

The injury looked to have interrupted a strong season for the 30-year-old, who has helped the Blues to top spot in the Premier League, as they close in on a second title in three years.

However, the Italian coach has now confirmed that Luiz should return in time for Monday’s hosting of relegation-threatened Middlesbrough.

As reported by Chelsea’s official website, Conte said: “I didn’t speak to the doctor about his injury but I don’t think it’s a serious injury. I hope he is available to play the next game.

“Also at this part of the season sometimes it’s important to try to play even if your condition is not 100%.

“David is showing us great commitment this season. Don’t forget he has an injury in the knee after the game against Man City.”

Impressively, Luiz has started all 30 fixtures since his return to west London, with the final nine minutes of the Everton clash being the only time he has missed.

The Brazil international has also been the most active player in Chelsea’s half of the field, averaging eight defensive actions per match.

Luiz’s pass accuracy of 83%, though, is the poorest of Conte’s three starting centre-backs, as is his tally of six yellow cards.
