Lewandowski: Liverpool will be fighting for the title this season under Klopp

Robert Lewandowski has backed Liverpool to challenge for the Premier League title this season, claiming that under Jurgen Klopp they have a “real chance” of success. Furthermore, the Bayern Munich forward added that he’s watched a few Reds game following the arrival of Klopp.

Liverpool have made an excellent start to the campaign, notching their fourth league win on the bounce this weekend with a 2-1 victory at Swansea City. The Reds have played some stunning football in the final third thus far, finally bearing all the characteristics of a Klopp team; hard-working and relentless both on and off the ball.

The club spent big money this summer to improve their squad, bringing in the likes of Sadio Mane and Georginio Wijnaldum, as they looked to iron-out the inconsistency that plagued their season last term. Another bonus in that regard was a lack of European football to contend with this year, easing the pressure on Klopp’s troops.

Lewandowski certainly believes that could work to their advantage in the title-race this season, backing his old Borussia Dortmund boss to push on for Premier League glory.

“Under Klopp I think they will be fighting for the title this season,” the 28-year-old Bayern Munich striker told Goal. “Pep and Manchester City will not make it easy for anybody to win the title, but Liverpool have a real chance.

“Without European football it can really help them with being fresh for games and with injuries and, even though Klopp is always smiling, he is ruthless enough to take advantage of that. I have watched some Liverpool games since the arrival of Klopp, and you can see that the players are enjoying playing for him.

“As a player you know that he totally has your back, he is like a father figure and, because you have that trust in him as a player, it makes you totally open to his methods and his ideas which, in the long term, you always see are for the benefit of your game and for the team.”

Liverpool have scored 18 goals and conceded 10 in their opening seven Premier League games this season, creating 111 chances, as they sit fourth on 16 points, two behind leaders Manchester City.

Next up for them following the international break is a home clash with Manchester United, before taking on West Bromwich Albion at Anfield.
