Liverpool urged to cash in on Coutinho as ‘Lallana and Mane have made him dispensable’

Liverpool should consider cashing in on star playmaker Philippe Coutinho this summer, believes Stan Collymore.

The 24-year-old started the campaign in explosive fashion and had netted five goals in his opening 11 league games to help propel Liverpool to the top of the table.

However, the Brazil international suffered an ankle injury back in November in a win over Sunderland, which forced him to miss seven league games.

Coutinho returned to league action in January, but has since scored just one league goal and delivered yet another poor performance in the draw with Manchester City on Sunday.

The attacking midfielder only signed a new contract with the Reds earlier this year, meaning his exit anytime soon seems particularly unlikely.

“Coutinho is a great six games a season player, when we all salute his little genius, goals and creativity and I know he’s been injured but I’m just not sure Liverpool will ever be able to hang their hat on him to guarantee big performances week in week out,” Collymore told Boylesport.

“The fact Lallana and Mane have kicked on under Klopp so much more than the little Brazilian tells my intuition that if one of the Iberian giants were to tickle the Reds fancy, even having signed a bumper contract and get a more dominating physical presence, like Mane in that attacking three.

“Controversial I know but Phil just isn’t that consistent!”
