Man United officially knock Liverpool off their perch after winning 42nd major honour

Manchester United are now officially the most decorated club in English football after Sunday’s EFL Cup final win over Southampton at Wembley.

Jose Mourinho’s side had to survive a number of scares, throwing away a two-goal lead, but ultimately the contest was settled by Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s winner, his 26th goal of an incredible campaign.

The victory, which also saw the Special One become the first manager in United’s esteemed history to win a trophy in a debut season, represented the club’s 42nd major honour, moving one ahead of their fiercest rivals Liverpool.

The Reds had already prepared for the worst in advance of United’s landmark win, changing their official Twitter bio which had previously proclaimed them to be England’s most successful club.

The text was subsequently edited to a more modest ‘official worldwide account of Liverpool FC’ and it will likely remain that way until Jurgen Klopp can get his hands on some silverware.

‘My greatest challenge is not what’s happening at the moment, my greatest challenge was knocking Liverpool right off their fucking perch. And you can print that,’ said Sir Alex Ferguson upon his appointment back in 1986.

It’s taken over 30 years, but United have finally achieved their greatest manager’s aim!
