Mourinho: Wenger has more respect than me despite not winning Premier League title for 18 years

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho lasted barely minutes before having a dig at Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger on Friday afternoon.

The Portuguese tactician and his counterpart have often been involved in heated debates both on and off the field in recent seasons, with things getting really emotional during a game at Stamford Bridge in 2014.

The two went head to head – quite literally – that day as Chelsea claimed the three points, with the pair having to be separated by the fourth official.

Wenger was questioned on his relationship with Mourinho during his press conference on Thursday and while the 67-year-old resisted the temptation of taking aim at the Man Utd boss, the same cannot not be said for the latter.

“I think Mr. Wenger has respect from the other people,” Mourinho said during Friday’s press conference. “I don’t think I have. My last Premier League title was 18 months ago, not 18 years ago.

“I am in the club where I want to be. I was champion in four different clubs: Porto, Real Madrid, Inter and Chelsea. I want to be champion in every club I work, which is quite a nice record if I can do that, so I want to do that at Manchester United.

“Tomorrow is the match between the two managers with the best record in the Premier League. I have 3 titles, I think Mr Wenger has three or four.

On facing Arsenal, Mourinho added: “That is not important really as I don’t play against managers. It is my team that plays against the opposition and you have some records that are better than others.

“Ultimately a football match is an isolated event and has nothing to do with what happened before or what may happen. It is one match and in that moment I do not think about previous records.”

Manchester United play host to Arsenal on Saturday afternoon at Old Trafford and both managers will be eager to get the last laugh.

Arsenal are currently the ones laughing in terms of league position, with the Gunners six points clear of Mourinho’s men.
