Nigerian star dreams second league title with Angolan club

Primeiro D’Agosto of Angola’s Nigerian-born playmaker Ibukun Akinfenwa is upbeat about his team’s prospects of winning a second successive league title as the Girabola approaches the halfway mark.

Ibukun, reacting to last Sunday’s 2-0 win over ASA which cemented D’Agosto’s position as league leaders with 33 points from 14 games, two more than city rivals Petro de Luanda, said they are motivated to do well after crashing out of the CAF Champions League this season in a shock 2-2 aggregate loss to Uganda’s KCCA.

“We lost to KCCA on aggregate, not because we didnt put in the effort but because it’s just one of those things in football. now, we have to save our season and that’s why we have concentrated on the league to make sure we win it again,” he began in a chat with isoccerng.com

To stave off the competition of Petro, Kabuscorp and Recreativo do Libolo, Ibukun reckons D’Agosto need to focus more on winning their own games and worry less about what the title rivals are doing.

He said: “We’ll keep doing our thing and keep our noses in front. Every game we play it is the same mission. to focus on our game and not take our eyes off the ball. As long as we win, what others do is not relevant.”

Ibukun, who’s the current best player in the league, is hopeful of winning the award again for a second year running even though winning the league title is a priority.

“Yea, I want to win the award again but it will only make sense if we win the league. Individual titles are good but it won’t mean much if we don’t win all the competitions we enter for,” he said.

On Friday Primeiro are up against 2013 league champions Kabuscorp who currently sit in third place on 29 points. A win will cement their place as champions of the first round of the Girabola.
