Ricardo Carvalho sentenced to seven months in prison over tax fraud

Former Portugal international defender Ricardo Carvalho has been given a seven-month prison sentence over tax offences which were committed during his spell at Real Madrid between 2011 and 2012.

The former Premier League winner spent three seasons at the Santiago Bernabeu under Jose Mourinho and accepted the sentence handed out to him by Madrid magistrate court.

The Spanish prosecution office had suggested a year-long prison sentence with a fine of €300,000, however in his final the hearing the judiciary felt this was ‘disproportionate’ to the offence, instead reducing the sentence to a seven-month prison term with a fine of €142,822.

The 37-year-old was given a reduced term for his full acknowledgement of the circumstances and his compliance in the investigation whilst repaying the entirety of the €545,981 requested by the magistrate.

Two-time Champions League winner Carvalho is currently plying his trade for Chinese Super League side Shanghai SIPG, however this latest news is expected to prompt him to call time on his playing career.
