Seaman: I was hoping Jamie Vardy would join Arsenal

Arsenal legend David Seaman has revealed that he isn’t surprised by the club’s attempt to sign Jamie Vardy.

The Gunners activated the release clause in the Leicester City striker’s contract, but must now wait until England’s participation at Euro 2016 is over before finding out whether Vardy wants to make the move.

Vardy played a major part in Leicester’s remarkable title success as he scored 24 league goals, and Seaman would like to see the switch come to fruition.

Asked whether he was surprised about Vardy’s potential move to Arsenal, Seaman, who was speaking with 888sport, said: “I was hoping that he’d come. He gives us another option, Jamie Vardy is not just a ball over the top player, he’s got a lot more to his game and if he can bring that into the Arsenal side as well as a ball over the top outlet then he’d be a great signing.”

If they do manage to sign Vardy, Arsenal’s chances of winning the Premier League will surely be boosted, with the striker capable of causing all manner of problems for defenders with his searing speed.

An astute finisher, Vardy may have only had one successful season at the highest level, but he would surely be a major asset for Arsenal and would be able to latch onto and hopefully make the most of the numerous opportunities that Mesut Ozil creates.

Arsenal have already made one acquisition ahead of next season, with midfielder Granit Xhaka arriving from Borussia Monchengladbach, and signing Vardy would be another major step in the right direction.
