Suarez: I don’t have a chance of winning the Ballon d’Or

Barcelona’s Luis Suarez believes he won’t win the Ballon d’Or as he’s not marketed in the right way.

After winning the Golden Shoe following his 40 goals in La Liga last season, the Uruguayan admitted he does not expect to beat the likes of team-mate Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo to this year’s Ballon d’Or.

However, he retained his pride at winning the award for Europe’s top scorer, the second time the 29-year-old has won the accolade.

“The Ballon d’Or is more to do with marketing and press than for achievements on the pitch,” said Suarez, as reported by ESPN FC.

“I’ve earned all the awards I’ve been given. The Golden Shoe is for scoring the most goals and there’s no option for people to take that away from me.”

“I don’t have a chance [with] the Ballon d’Or because it works around marketing and I don’t have that. My ambition is to win another Champions League, that would be great.”

No player other than Messi or Ronaldo have won the most coveted individual award in football since Kaka’s triumph in 2007, and the two are expected to challenge each other for the award once again this year.

Suarez previously won the Golden Shoe in 2014, sharing the prize with Ronaldo after they both amassed 31 league goals for that season.

The award represents yet another trophy for the former Liverpool forward who has been hugely successful since his move to Spain from Merseyside. He has won two La Liga titles, a Champions League as well as the Copa del Rey.
