Wenger: Arsenal squad has enough ‘character’ to bounce back

Arsene Wenger believes Arsenal’s players have the “character” to bounce back from their recent spell of poor form.

The Gunners are facing an uphill battle to secure a top-four finish, having won just one of their last five Premier League fixtures.

Arsenal’s insipid performances have, once again, seen questions regarding the players’ mental fortitude forced back onto the agenda.

Wenger’s side remain capable of playing attractive football but doubts linger in regards to their ability to dig out results in the face of adversity.

The north Londoners travel to Middlesbrough on Monday and Wenger has urged his team to prove they can cope with the mental challenge ahead of them.

“I give myself the same message as the players: ‘Get better’. What I have learned is what I knew already – football is complex.

“When things don’t go your way you are tested on the mental front more than on technical quality.

“Our test at the moment is there – can we be united and not divided?

“Top level sport is about character. I can finds you hundreds of players with technical ability at the same level as our
players,

“What makes the results is the character. These players are at this level because they have the character,” he added.

Arsenal are seven points adrift of the Champions League places and could be even further behind when they kick off at the Riverside Stadium.
