Erik Ten Hag Puts £50m Mistake’s Future In Further Doubt

Erik Ten Hag Puts £50m Mistake’s Future In Further Doubt

Tyrell Malacia may occasionally be used as a right-back for Man United this season, according to Erik ten Hag, pouring further doubt on Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s future.

Wan-Bissaka was a mainstay at Old Trafford after he was acquired from Crystal Palace in a £50m move in 2020. However, the 24-year-old has lost his place in the lineup since Ten Hag’s arrival.

Following Ten Hag’s appointment this summer, he moved quickly to capture Tyrell Malacia. The former Feyenoord left-back became the Dutchman’s first summer signing at United.

Luke Shaw, who, like Wan-Bissaka, has experienced a complete collapse in confidence and form, was quickly ousted by Malacia.

Wan-Bissaka has watched the last few games from the sidelines alongside Shaw. And in the defeat to Real Sociedad last Friday, the full-back was so far down the United hierarchy that Ten Hag utterly ignored him.

What Did Ten Hag Say?

Ten Hag chose to play Victor Lindelof, after taking off Dalot, in an unfamiliar right-back role instead of bringing on Wan-Bissaka. This was despite the fact that the Londoner was on the bench.

And after losing his spot to Dalot, it now seems that Malacia, a left-back by trade, could potentially play ahead of Wan-Bissaka at right-back. The Dutchman looked at home on the opposite flank in the last minutes of Thursday night’s victory.

After the game, Ten Hag spoke to The Athletic about Malacia’s role in the match.

“Sancho in preparing the goal with Bruno he was in the centre-forward position. We did some experiments this night, bringing Tyrell on the right and Luke on the left.

“That’s two good moves, we can be very able and we need that in the season.”
