Former Manchester City defender, Benjamin Mendy has signed for Ligue 1 club, FC Lorient less than a week after being acquitted of rape and attempted rape.
The French defender will now compete in France’s top division, according to a statement posted on Lorient’s website confirming the deal. “FC Lorient is pleased to announce today the signing of French international left-back Benjamin Mendy for two seasons,” it said.
“After having satisfied the traditional medical examination. Benjamin Mendy, world champion 2018, quadruple winner of the Premier League under the colours of Manchester City. And French champion of Ligue 1 with Monaco in particular. Comes to reinforce the Lorient workforce for this new season. The native of Longjumeau, who will wear number 5 with the Merlus, will take his first steps at Espace FCL today. Welcome Benjamin!”
Last Friday, at Chester Crown Court, Mendy wept as the verdict of “not guilty” brought an almost three-year-long procedure to a close.
He was accused of rape, attempted rape, and sexual assault numerous times. After a five-month trial, he was found not guilty of six counts of rape. And one count of sexual assault in January of this year.

The jury did not resolve two accusations involving two women. Which necessitated a new trial. The jury of six men and six women found Mendy not guilty of all the charges brought against him on Friday.
Mendy moved from Monaco to Manchester City for $52 million in 2017. Signing a contract that paid him £100,000. But when his contract expired at the end of June, he was let go. He played his last football minute with City in August 2021.
