Jules Kounde acknowledges having transfer discussions with former Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel, but has now revealed why he ultimately decided to join Barcelona.
The France international defender had found himself at the centre of much speculation prior to a £56m deal taking him to Camp Nou during the summer of 2022.
The versatile 23-year-old received a lot of interest from the Premier League. However, he ultimately concluded that Camp Nou was the best fit for him.
Since moving from Sevilla to Barcelona, Kounde has made five appearances for the team. He has recorded four triumphs in Xavi’s team, who are enjoying an undefeated start to the 2022–23 La Liga season.
Why Did Kounde Choose Barcelona Over Chelsea?
When asked why he made the decision to choose Barcelona over interests from England, Kounde told L’Equipe: “First, I come to a huge club, which has known good times and which, lately, has had less.
“I come to a project that I would not call reconstruction, because we already have a competitive team, but rather, being upturned.
“I was interested in being part of this new wave. In search of titles, and to put Barca back where it has always been, among the best clubs.
Jules Koundé: “I spoke to Tuchel, who gave me a speech and explained his project to me… I felt he wanted to convince me to join Chelsea. But I simply preferred Xavi’s speech when he called me and explained his project.” pic.twitter.com/WlqESWrY1c

“Then there was the conversation with the coach. We talked about football, mainly. I felt a real confidence from him, that he had a real knowledge of myself, my game and my qualities.
“I spoke with Tuchel and I also felt that he wanted me to come but I simply preferred Xavi’s speech.”
On October 1, Kounde and Barcelona will be back in action against Real Mallorca, after the international break.
