Real Madrid Edge Atletico 2-1 In Fierce Madrid Derby, Extend Perfect Start

Real Madrid defeated Atletico 2-1 at the Wanda Metropolitano on Sunday to extend their perfect start to the La Liga season.

Despite playing second fiddle for the majority of the first half, Carlo Ancelotti’s team were ruthless in front of goal. Federico Valverde and Rodrygo scored to put them two goals ahead in the game.

Although Mario Hermoso scored a late goal for Atleti, they were unable to tie the score. The defender was later dismissed in stoppage time, after a second bookable offence.

How Did Real Madrid Win The Derby?

Diego Simeone’s side started brightly and went close through defender Felipe and Yannick Carrasco. However, found themselves behind when Rodrygo emphatically finished the visitors’ first attempt on target on 18 minutes.

They doubled their lead with their next effort on goal when Valverde fired in from close range after Vinicius’s shot had rebounded off the post.

Seven minutes from the end, Atletico set up a thrilling finale with a shoulder goal from substitute Hermoso. However, Hermoso was later dismissed for a second booking, and Real held on to win the game.

With the win, Real move back to the top of the LaLiga standings with 18 points after six games, two more than Barcelona in second.

Meanwhile, Atleti are seventh on the table, eight points behind their city rivals.
